Make Sure It’s the Hem Of His Garment
You may be asking, “Mark, what does that mean?” Let’s take a moment to dive deep and see what our Living Word has to say about it.
In Matthew 9:19–22, we read:
“So Jesus and his disciples got up and went with him. Just then, a woman who had suffered for twelve years with constant bleeding came up behind him. She touched the fringe of his robe, for she thought, ‘If I can just touch his robe, I will be healed.’ Jesus turned around, and when he saw her, he said, ‘Daughter, be encouraged! Your faith has made you well.’ And the woman was healed at that moment.”
Just imagine that a single touch of His garment brought healing. That is the kind of power that Jesus carries, and the amazing part? That same power is available to all who believe in Him and pursue Him with faith.
Can you picture that level of faith? Just one touch, and she was made whole. That’s the bold, unwavering faith that Jesus honors—the kind that moves mountains. As we see in Matthew 17:20:
“You don’t have enough faith,” Jesus told them. “I tell you the truth, if you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it would move. Nothing would be impossible.”
That’s the power of a relationship with Jesus Christ. It’s life-changing, mountain-moving, healing power.
I came across a quote by TobyMac that really spoke to me:
“When you’re hanging on by a thread, make sure it’s the Hem of His Garment.”
Let that sink in. Life is full of trials—pain, stress, uncertainty—but if we’re holding onto the hem of His garment, we’re holding onto hope, healing, and peace. Everything is going to be okay, not because life is easy but because Jesus is with us through it all.
So, sing it with me:
🎵 “Don’t worry ‘bout a thing… ‘cause every little thing is gonna be alright.” 🎵
Why? Because today, you’re letting go of fear and worry, and you’re taking hold of the only thing that truly sustains—the hem of His garment. Jesus will fix it. He will heal. He will comfort. He will bring peace. He will when we can’t.
First Things First: Get to Know Jesus
Too often, we say we believe, but do we really understand why Jesus came? He didn’t just come to be a great teacher or a miracle worker. He came to save us.
In John 10:1–18, Jesus paints a beautiful picture of who He is to us:
“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd sacrifices his life for the sheep… I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved… My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.”
Jesus is our Good Shepherd, our Gate, our Guide, our Protector, and our Savior. He knows each of us by name. He doesn’t run when things get hard—He lays down His life for us.
If Jesus is all of these things—our healer, our provider, our peace—why wouldn’t we reach out and grab hold of Him?
One More Glimpse of His Power
Let’s turn to Luke 5:17–20 for one more example of faith in action:
“Some men came carrying a paralyzed man on a mat… they couldn’t reach Jesus because of the crowd, so they went up on the roof and lowered him through the tiles… When Jesus saw their faith, he said, ‘Friend, your sins are forgiven.’”
These men had such deep faith in Jesus that they were willing to go to extreme lengths to bring their friend to Him. They knew that if they could just get their friend in front of Jesus, everything would change.
Do we have that kind of faith for our friends? That kind of urgency? That kind of passion?
So, What Now?
Let today be the day you make the decision to reach out and grab hold of the hem of His garment. Jesus came for you. He came to be your Good Shepherd, to lead you through trials, to heal your wounds, and to bring you peace and salvation.
If you already know Jesus, then be like those friends in Luke 5. There are people in your life who need Him. Don’t just pray from a distance—carry them to Jesus. Share Him. Show Him. Bring them to the place where they, too, can take hold of His garment.
Jesus Is…
To encourage you further, here’s a list of who Jesus is to us:
- Our Savior (Luke 2:11)
- Our Healer (Isaiah 53:5)
- Our Peace (John 14:27)
- Our Good Shepherd (John 10:11)
- Our Friend (John 15:15)
- Our Hope (Romans 15:13)
- Our Rock (Psalm 18:2)
- Our Light (John 8:12)
- Our Redeemer (Isaiah 44:22)
- Our Strength (Philippians 4:13)
- Our Way to the Father (John 14:6)
So grab hold of His garment. There is no one like Jesus, and no one can do what He can do. Amen.
