Wisdom, is this a natural occurrence, is it given, or is it learned? That’s a good question!
Let’s go ahead and look at what Wisdom means by the world’s definition. Wisdom: the quality of having experience, knowledge, and good judgement; the quality of being wise.
You see, the way the world scales wisdom is by how smart, successful, or wealthy you are. It’s based on your achievements, success, and/or status. To the world’s defense, it does have wise individuals, in fact super intelligent, even genius. There have been plenty of inventions, discoveries, and accomplishments over the lifespan of time. Honestly, if you did those things, then from the world’s perspective you must be wise. I would like to share something with you, God actually thinks that all the wisdom that’s from this world is foolishness. Yes, I said it, the world’s wisdom is all foolishness. I know there are some of you out there that think this guy is off his rocker but wait a minute let me explain. Okay, do you trust God and His Word? Because I tend to side with His Word. Let me tell you why. If you would, just dive right into the Word of God with me really quick. I’ll show you what I mean. Turn with me if you would to Hebrews 4:12:
“12 For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. “
God’s word is so powerful that its actually living. His words alone can bring dry bones to life. I say that, to say this that we as Christians must rely on Scripture alone. Let me ask you this, have you heard of Sola Scriptura? Well, let me explain that for you. Sola Scriptura means by scripture alone.
Sola scriptura (“by scripture alone” in English) is a theological doctrine held by Christian denominations that holds the Christian scriptures as the sole infallible source of authority for Christian faith and practice.
What this means is what the Scriptures says goes. That’s our life’s bread, our source for our spiritual food. It’s our oxygen and blood that will keep our spiritual person alive. So, we must believe all that it says. So, with that said, let us dive into our Word in regards to Wisdom. If you would, open your Bibles to 1 Corinthians 1:18-31:
The Wisdom of God
18 The message of the cross is foolish to those who are headed for destruction! But we who are being saved know it is the very power of God.19 As the Scriptures say,
“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise
and discard the intelligence of the intelligent.”
20 So where does this leave the philosophers, the scholars, and the world’s brilliant debaters? God has made the wisdom of this world look foolish.21 Since God in his wisdom saw to it that the world would never know him through human wisdom, he has used our foolish preaching to save those who believe. 22 It is foolish to the Jews, who ask for signs from heaven. And it is foolish to the Greeks, who seek human wisdom. 23 So when we preach that Christ was crucified, the Jews are offended and the Gentiles say it’s all nonsense.
24 But to those called by God to salvation, both Jews and Gentiles, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 This foolish plan of God is wiser than the wisest of human plans, and God’s weakness is stronger than the greatest of human strength.
26 Remember, dear brothers and sisters, that few of you were wise in the world’s eyes or powerful or wealthy when God called you. 27 Instead, God chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise. And he chose things that are powerless to shame those who are powerful. 28 God chose things despised by the world, things counted as nothing at all, and used them to bring to nothing what the world considers important. 29 As a result, no one can ever boast in the presence of God.
30 God has united you with Christ Jesus. For our benefit God made him to be wisdom itself. Christ made us right with God; he made us pure and holy, and he freed us from sin. 31 Therefore, as the Scriptures say, “If you want to boast, boast only about the Lord.”
Did you get that? God will choose the foolish and the weak in the world’s eyes to shame the wise minds of this world. We look around this world and we see it prospering, we see extraordinary things being accomplished and done by the ungodly, we see countless people wanting to lead others with their worldly wisdom and this pertains to all areas of life like health, finances, marriage, children, education and your life’s direction. The actual wisdom of the world is so vast, it’s no wonder people look on and fall for it. Believe it or not, that is what God warns us about that in His Word. Turn with me, if you would to where Jesus is speaking in Matthew 22:29:
“You are deluded, because your hearts are not filled with the revelation of the Scriptures, with the power of God”
You see God tells us that the world’s wisdom is foolish, all the world’s wisdom, aside from God, could never save 1 single person. It could never bring you to salvation or enter you into eternity. Worldly wisdom is for our own pride. It will only get you what the world seeks after and that’s lust, money, and/or fame and as you can see from reading in 1 Corinthians that it is all non-sense. Remember that God uses the foolish to shame the wise.
I would like to tell you about a guy named Bezalel. He was a God’s craftsman. You see, God wanted Bezalel to build his temple. God granted him all the wisdom and craftsmanship needed to perfectly know how to design and craft in all sorts of trades, precious stones, metals, rock, wood, and many more. There is no school Bezalel could have attended to achieve this and this is exactly what He is speaking of in 1 Corinthians 18-29. God said and I quote He will use (according to the world) the foolish to shame (according to the world) the wise. Don’t be dismayed by others if God has you somewhere and/or has told you He wants you to do something in particular for Him. Don’t look around at the wise of this world and especially don’t listen to them, because the Lord can grant you all the wisdom you need to fulfill His mission for Him. It may not be at the right time or at the time we think we need it, but for certain it will be in His perfect timing. Here is a tidbit of Wisdom from the Lord that I will share with you, God is an eleventh-hour God. Meaning that He may not show up when we want, but He always shows up right in the nick of time. All we need to do is trust in Him with all our heart, soul, and mind. Mark 12:30 & Proverbs 3:5:
Mark 12:30 And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.
Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding.
You may be wondering to yourself, “Why don’t I have this awesome, amazing Wisdom from the Lord?” Well, let’s look into Matthew 22:29:
“You are deluded, because your hearts are not filled with the revelations of the scriptures or with the power of God. “
You see we need to be so filled up with the Word of God that His truth comes bubbling out of us. Coupled with this truth that must make up our very fibers, is our obedience. If we read 1 John 2:15-17:
15 Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you. 16 For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the father, but are from this world. 17 And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever.
This does include its wisdom and why you may ask? Because God says it as plain as day that the world’s wisdom is foolishness to Him. I am, in particularly, talking about the world not needing our Savior. It doesn’t need God. It has its own ways apart from God. Its wisdom is fabricated by man and by the rulers of this world. Saints, we must be in our Word and being filled up on a daily basis or we will be consumed by what we see and hear while on this earth. Read with me if you will in John 3:36:
36 And anyone who believes in God’s Son has eternal life. Anyone who doesn’t obey the Son will never experience eternal life but remains under God’s angry judgment.”
If we are not obeying our Father in heaven and we are deluded to the point that our spiritual person can’t run any longer, than how do you think you will be receiving God’s abundant, all-knowing Wisdom? His wisdom is for His chosen, His elect, those whom have dedicated themselves to Him as their King.
So, to answer the question “How do I obtain it?”, I’ll give it to you in a nut shell. You for one must be a saved, born again believer, living for Him and through Him on a mission to serve Him and do His will, to go where He wants you to go and to do what He wants you to do. You must trust and obey because there is no other way and you must die to yourself. Then by being in prayer and diving deep into His word in all humility and patience, you will be given your portion.
Godly Wisdom is like if God reaches down and personally removes the cob webs of deception that’s placed there by the world. He reaches down and removes it, so you can see. The Bible says in John 9:25 “I was blind but now I can see.” It also says in 1 Corinthians 2:14 “But people who aren’t spiritual can’t receive these truths from God’s Spirit. It all sounds foolish to them and they can’t understand it, for only those who are spiritual can understand what the Spirit means.”
We must, as a people who are longing for the truth, get closer to Him. For it is He who created you and He loves us so much that He sent His one and only Begotten Son that whomsoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. This comes through our obedience and life devotion to Him who saved us.
Let me end with this, God wants to bless us with His wisdom and knowledge. He wants us to see and not be spiritually blind. But know this, He will not bless us with this gift, if our feet are in the world and we are not living for Him. If you want to overcome this mess that the world has dished out to you, number 1 you have to know and understand that the wisdom of this world is foolishness and stop listening to it and number 2 you must be devoted to our Savior and commit to being obedient to His Word. Amen!
